Getting on the ice

There are access stairs and ramps all along the canal — the busiest are by the National Arts Centre downtown, at Fifth Avenue and Lansdowne in the Glebe, and at Dows Lake. Heated change chalets and rental huts open along the route when the Skateway is open.

Natural ice changes quickly: after a thaw or snowfall, sections can close while others stay open. The NCC status lists each section separately.

When the canal is closed

Ottawa has more than 250 neighbourhood outdoor rinks. Many have boards for hockey, lights for evening skating and a change hut. See which are skateable today.

Questions

How long is the Rideau Canal Skateway?

About 7.8 km, between downtown Ottawa (near the National Arts Centre) and Dows Lake.

Who decides when the Skateway is open?

The National Capital Commission (NCC) operates the Skateway and posts the official daily status. It only opens once the ice is thick enough across the whole section, so check the NCC's status before you go.

When does it usually open?

Typically in January, after a long stretch of deep cold, and it usually closes in late February or early March. Mild winters can shorten the season dramatically or prevent it from opening.

Is skating on the Skateway free?

Yes. Skating is free; skate rentals, sharpening and food are available from vendors along the canal in season.

Can I play hockey on the canal?

Hockey sticks and pucks aren't allowed on the Skateway. For shinny, use one of Ottawa's boarded neighbourhood rinks.
